Looking at the Macbook Air, and seeing how thin, and how elegant, and how lightweight it is, I just have a feel that soon Apple might be able to come up with a very successful version of a Tablet computer.
The problem with Tablet computer today is always that current Tablet manufacturer still try to cram "so many things into one". Hence we got a compromised tablet that is still a bit too thick to carry around. It is a PC that "try so hard" to become a "true tablet device", rather than a true Tablet device since day 1.
To make things even worse: it is also often come up with a "built-in" with pen-stroke that is not 100% trouble-free (after a few months use), and with windows tablet operating system that -- after few months use -- significantly slow down, up to a point where the pen tablet start to loose its pen-stroke accuracy, hence the entire tablet device become unusable anymore.
Look at the MacBook Air, I feel that Apple might be able to come up with an ideal, practical, workable Tablet computer pretty soon. Apple seem to have the "instinct" that would be required to produce such meticulous "paper-like" device.
I imagine:
- Apple Tablet computer (MacTablet?) will be extremely thin.
- It will be extremely lightweight.
- The pen would be very accurate with very detail press and brush stroke gesture.
- The battery at least would last 4 hours (or even more).
- The keyboard would be a soft intelligent keyboard that can be activated or hide at anytime depends on use.
- The iPhone touch hand-gesture can be applied to scroll-up and scroll-down the screen, or to zoom-in and zoom-out information and document that we saw on screen.
If above qualities can be fulfilled, perhaps finally Tablet computer concept would become truly successful. People no longer have reason not adopt the technology, because:
- Bringing the Tablet would be as feather-weight as bringing a stack of paper.
- And because with digitalization in place, more activities can be done faster.
For example: with a Tablet computer around, once the process of writing and/or drawing is done, document can be immediately send via email, posted to the web, or even send abroad for further processing. No physical paper document involved.
When such truly happening, then the beautiful concept of "paper-digital" will almost becoming a true reality.
Looking at today, I feel Apple would -- perhaps -- would be the first company that would successfully be able to bring such successful Tablet product in the marketplace.
We'll wait and see. Such device would be so much useful for all of us. It would redefine the way we interact with our computer and the way we do our work in ways that we could never imagine before too!

currently there are mac tablets that are called modbooks. although Apple supports and supplies the parts for the modbooks its not an official product (yet?)
The tablets that this article is talking about however would be the rumored surprise for the last quarter of the year. I am hoping that this rumor holds truth and that Apple understands that if they price this around or between the current macmini and the macbook they will sell like wildfire. Apple doesn't disappoint so I'll just keep hoping that they put news out on it soon.
