On July 7, 2009 Google announced that they are going to release a new operating system for netbook computers. The operating system is named Google Chrome OS and is expected to be open-sourced-released later by the end of this year. By mid 2010 it is expected to be available in the hand of consumers.
While initially the Linux-based desktop OS will power netbook computers, soon it will be extended to cover traditional computer as well. You might ask what the motivation of all this? As Google said in their press release:
Computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don't want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates.
Google Chrome OS is Google attempt to re-think what operating systems should be!
