I did some research recently on how to make my windows-mobile device easier and simpler to use for various mode of working that I'm doing (e.g. If I'm SMS-ing I'm using one hand typing, if I'm discussing I do jot down drawing, if I'm browsing and typing longer URL I use thumb-typing) ...
After exploring the possible alternatives, I decided that having the following capabilities would be important:
- Ability to scroll and navigate quickly and easily with "finger touch" like what the iPhone does. (So I don't have to take out the "stylus" just to scroll and browse around document and info).
- Ability to SMS with one hand. (Just like when I'm using my normal handphone).
- Ability to thumb-type with bigger size keyboard. (The current default keyboard is way too small!). Again this "bigger-size" keyboard is another good thing that iPhone does very well. :-) :-) :-)
To make those attempt a reality, I found out that the following hardware and software would be required:
Touch-Flow/Finger-Touch Capability:
HTC-Touch. At the current moment, HTC touch is the only windows based hardware device that would allow you to do "fingering" similar to what you can do on an iPhone.
"iPhone-like" keyboard software:
Phone-pad software:

Now -- with all those components in place -- you can "tune" your windows-mobile device so it would behave pretty similar to the iPhone:
- Finger-scroll and navigate with your finger through the HTC Touch-Flow feature.
- Type on the bigger, friendlier and more convenient thumb-type keyboard.
- And while you're driving (I'm not really sure whether you or shall NOT SMS-ing when you drive) ... or eating ice cream :-), use the handphone-keypad to type your SMS messages with one hand.
Some people might ask, why don't you just buy an iPhone to make that happen?. In my case, I still need the stylus capability to help me draw and jot-down thing on my mobile device, and unfortunately the iPhone doesn't have that.
Now sincere we're talking about stylus, with all above software and interaction capabilities in place, don't forget that you still have one more "great input device" in your " windows mobile hardware arsenal": the stylus!
No matter how powerful and easy the new keyboard interface is, I still a big believer that stylus still have its place:
- You can use it to write down, jotdown, draw and annotate quickly -- simple and very quick -- almost the way you use pen & paper!
- For those who are really good with grafitti, many times you can jot-down your thoughts with grafitti faster than if you use thumb-type or phone-type method.
This is the "paper-like" software that said can handle up to 1,000 pages of "hand-writing" and "drawing":
By perfectly perfectly mix and combined above elements together, perhaps we eventually turn our device into a "perfect" device for working, text editing, communicating and drawing purposes at once. Most importantly: the right input method now can be selected to perfectly fit the type of work that needs to be done at particular time.
Happy thumb-typing, ... touch-flowing ... jot-down-drawing ... stylusing ... and keypad-ing with your "iPhone"-like smartphone device!. Hopefully these info could be useful. :-)
ps:
- Please ensure you read (and follow) the installation steps instruction thoroughly, especially when installing the iPhone keyboard software. (If you do, then the software will run perfectly).
- Make sure you check license for the software. Some of these -- interestingly -- are free.
- If you think "touch-flo" could be later, you can still add and install above software, and make your working-phone device even more convenient, "smart", easy to use, useful, and powerful to help you get things done quickly, effectively and productively at anytime.
