To differentiate between a truly great consultant (which brings real insights, great perspectives, innovation, hands-on experiences and truly breakthrough-yet-practical ideas to the plate), and -- what I called -- a true 'insultant' -- those snake oil salesmen selling best practices with the goal to make every company the same, is really the first major step that every business need to do in engaging a successful consulting initiative.
With proper choice in place, consulting process could become something worthy and powerful to be engaged with; without it, it would all simply would become a great waste of time.
In this excellent post, Idris Moote take a great insight from Peter Drucker which explains why the profession of a management consultant is important; how the presence of a real great consultant is major; what a truly great consultant could fill in within the 'gap' areas that the business practitioner and its management can not (or shall not) do themselves; and why -- in engaging with these consultants -- it is always important and critical to always choose the best.
