Bill Gates is a technologist, probably one of the best technologies -- beside Steve Jobs -- who understand how to pick, choose and strategically apply technology for the better.
Beside his awesomeness in making and choosing technology that is useful and wonderful to use; one of the biggest thing I really "love" about Bill Gates since very very long time ago (when Microsoft was small) is always practicality of his vision and opinion; and his clarity and outspoken-ness in expressing such.
In recent interview regarding the current "buzzing" social technology and stuff, Bill Gates cast his view and opinion. He said:
“All these tools of technology let us waste our time if we’re not careful,” he said.
Mr. Gates said the buzzwords “social networking” applied to something that had been around for a long time — a way to communicate with numerous people at the same time.
He acknowledged that he once had a Facebook page, but every day “ten thousand people tried to be my friend.” He said he spent too much time trying to decide “Do I know them? Don’t I know them?” Ultimately, he said, “I had to give it up.”
Asked whether he ever “unplugs,” abandoning e-mail messages, computers and his cellphone entirely, Mr. Gates laughed and said “I’m not a 24-hour technology person.” He said he read a lot “and sometimes not on a screen.”
I guess that is truly true!
- 6 or 8 months ago as I shared with you, I gave up my facebook-on-myblackberry application, and as a result of doing so, less unnecessary distruption can be filtered without having to filter it directly.
- A few days after that "process", I turn-off most of my facebook-to-email notification -- as a result: even less unnecessary distruption can be filtered immediately; and my email box becomes "cleaner" and more useful.
- Just recently, I filter my facebook homepage, so I can see "only" walls from my family, colleagues and friends that is closest to me only. It make the facebook even more 'meaningful' -- more focused, less 'distractful' -- and in a way: more powerful and useful too.
As we technologist, entrepreneur, innovators, designers and practical user always know, technology is a wonderful thing. But as these tool increasingly 'penetrating' our lives, seems increasingly we truly need to proactively figure out how to control, organize and orchestrate it, so it keep us productive.
Proactive filtering is the way to go. Modern people that can 'proactively filter' unnecessary messages and information out of their daily routine would become productive people that burst with wisdom of productivity enabled by their tool; whereas those that fail to filter nor manage the flood of information that flow across the globe -- will eventually end up being 'drown' inside it; and struggle their days everyday using computers, smartphones and many productivity tools to 'filter unnecessary garbage' which keep them busy everyday, every minute and the whole day -- in a totally unproductive ways!
Of course everybody has their own ways and choice of how they are going to use technology, and that is truly rightful and respectable. It's just that -- with increasing amount of tool, connectivity and information we had in our hand today -- we come to the fact and situation, whereby if we are not starting to proactively control, manage and apply it for truest power and productivity, we might would end up being totally improductive because of the productivity tools that we invented!
I still love Bill Gates for his truly wonderful vision and insight of 'practicality' of the past 15-20 years. He is still as practical and as sharp, from the days when Microsoft was small until Microsoft had become today! He is is the kind of practical, visionary, outspoken, no buzz-word, practical, daring, not boastful Microsoft leader that I still truly "love". He is definitely the 'great unique thing' behind the "greatness" of Microsoft, the one "element" that makes practicality, relevance and exciting ingenuity of Microsoft product, technology and product in the past possible. He is the 'soul' that makes Microsoft as a company able to transform itself from a tiny company to become extremely huge and powerful as it is today.
For those wisdom, vision, practicality, simplicity and outspoken-ness that Bill Gates still burst and convey today as youthfully, as practically, and as 'brilliantly' as when he was in his younger days, I still respect him so much. This is "my Microsoft leader". This is the kind of leader, entrepreneur and visionary behind Microsoft that make the name "Microsoft" so much exciting and exhilarating to program and support (in the past).
For all these sentiments and joy of observing great leadership and entrepreneurial journey of Bill Gates, I always have a 'wish and dream': that the character and 'soul' of a true "Bill Gates" really need to be back at Microsoft someday in the future. Then Microsoft leadership and product would be great once more!
