It still amaze me to imagine how Thomas J. Watson, Sr -- the father of IBM -- help the world understand the relevance, power and potential of "computing, tabulating and recording" for business (and beyond) since 100 years ago.
Such pioneering effort redefine the core fabric of modern society. It shape what it could become.
I believe it took a man with a truly great vision (and with strongest ability to execute his vision) to make such great did happen.
I imagine Mr. Watson -- who at the age of 40 joined CTR as General Manager, and 10 years late (in 1924) renamed the company International Business Machine (IBM) -- must be a truly visionary persona, with great ability to execute and make things happen. No wonder his slogan, as known around the entire IBM offices at that time (and I believe in IBM today) was: THINK. His thinking about IBM as a company, about its core business, and its core value as a business (and his ability to execute what he think about) is indeed truly brilliant.
Towards Mr. Watson Sr's amazing ability to think and see "things happen", Thomas J. Watson Jr -- the son, who later become the 2nd CEO of IBM, replacing his father -- share an interesting remark:
"... I remember one day dad come back home from the office, he got so excited and tell mom that the got a new name for the company. It's International Business Machine (later known as IBM). My feel at that time was: International Business Machine? That tiny company? ... The name seems 'too big' for such a tiny outfit at that time. It was years later we all understand that what dad (Thomas J. Watson, Sr) envision was not how IBM was (at that time), .. but the potential of what it could become".
It was perhaps Mr. Watson Jr who bring IBM into the computer era. But probably it was Mr. Watson Sr, who show us the massive potential value of "computing, tabulating and recording" for business and the world we live in since its early beginning. Such thinking changes society of his time, it changes society of our time too!
I imagine there would be no "computer" company as we know it today -- no DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation), no Compaq, no DELL, no HP, no Apple, no IBM as we know today -- if it was not of Mr. Watson, Sr and his pioneering "computing/recording/tabulating" effort since 100 years ago.
To me, to imagine how Mr. Watson, Sr -- as a business man, and business builder of 100 years ago -- could "envision" and "see" all these relevance and possibilities of computing/tabulating/recording for business (and beyond) is still indeed truly amazing and truly awesome.
In that perspective, the 100 years of IBM is indeed truly truly truly truly awesome!
