The first time I saw Elfa Secoria performing live on stage was some
15-20 years ago. He was in his mid twenties, and as a high school
student at that time, with my dad watching Elfa performing was such a
pleasing experience.
I never forget those exciting moments of seeing some of the best
Indonesian musician and performers perform live in Bandung during
those days together with my dad. We watched Bubbi Chen, Benny
Likumahua, Kibod Maulana performing live and "amaze" their audiences.
We saw the Kangguru Band/Purwa Tjaraka performing. We saw Harry Roesli
performing live, singing songs on stage with his "legendary"
funny-poets-and-lyrics. We saw Opera Kecoa live in Bandung during
their peak. We saw Harvey Malaiholo live performing, together with
Erwin Gutawa in the Elfas's band at that time. It was such as joy.
But of all the performances I saw at that time, even until now, Elfa's
gesture and performance the first time I saw him performing always
struck a memorable state in my mind. Elfa poses an amazing leadership
quality in the way he conduct and inspire the band. I am not a music
expert of whatever, but as a "kid" sitting in the audience at that
time, I can strongly feel how Elfa can bring up the tone, gesture and
spirit of the whole band, through the music (and the keyboard
instrument) he's playing.
He was such a talent. And such talent excitingly flow in the mid 80s
and 90s when Elfa and his colleagues of star performers start
accomplishing many exciting "first time award" for Indonesia through
his music and band performances. Watching Harvey Malaiholo performing
live on worldstage, with Elfa's Singers, Elfa's Big Band, was such a
memorable joy. Watching Harvey sang the winning song and hearing the
tunes "... seandainya kita slalu bersatu berpadu ... dalam angan dan
harapan, dalam duka dan nestapa ... menuju Indonesia bahagia!" ... was
such an electrifying feel, that brings up your sense of spirit to
bring up your best for the country to the highest degree.
Throughout the years, we grew up watching Elfa and Indonesian music
growing to such a stage. I love what Elfa did with the Elfa's Singers
during their peak era. I love what he did with the award winning
Indonesia 6. I am amazed with his initiative of compiling some of the
most memorable and beautiful Indonesian songs into a great tune and
album.
The past couple of years, every time I saw Purwa Tjaraka
orchestra/band, or Erwin Gutawa's orchestra, etc performing or
mentioned on TV, one thing always tickle my mind is to ask: Where's
Elfa Secioria now?Elfa musical instrumentation was always such a joy.
My senses always tells me that Elfa probably produces some of most
fascinating musicorchestration that is most pleasing to the ears of
both the local and the international audiences. In the world of
beautiful music composition and orchestration, along with my likes of
beautiful amazing composition from Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn,
Tschaikovsky, Johan Strauss and Frederic Chopin, Elfa is my "musical
hero" too.
Curiosity into what Elfa recently doing leads me to recently heard
that Elfa nowadays is initiating some choir-related-works, which
essentially try to introduce the excitement and beauty of Indonesian
music (and Indonesia's winning performance gesture) to the worldstage
platform and to international audiences at large. Hearing this, once
again I am totally amazed by Elfa's ability, creativity, passion,
dedication and willingness to take on the necessary hardwork to be
able to bring the wonderful aspects of Indonesian music and tradition,
in Elfa's characteristically beautiful, amazing and winning-gesture.
In many ways, Elfa's act, passion and amazing accomplishment is an
inspiration. As for myself: along with the spirit of my father -- a
truly talented entrepreneur and businessman who introduces me to the
beauty of Indonesian culture, and to some of Indonesia's greatest
talent and most dedicated musicians; and along with the amazing
inspiration from my mother -- a truly honest and dedicated university
teacher who would stand up passionately everyday to bring the best
spirit of teaching to the next generation, in the pure spirit of
making Indonesia better; and along with the spirit of many other of
our great Indonesian anchestor too -- may we, and each of us able to
continue every of our effort to make Indonesia better too.
This way, one day, perhaps we could look back through the exciting
journey of our lifetime, looking back, and be glad that perhaps indeed
-- in our own unique ways -- through time, each and everyone of us was
indeed once try, continue, and never stop trying to contribute and do
our best to bring the best of our Indonesia's heritage, culture and
talent for the betterness of our country, our people, and for the
betterness of our greater society as a whole.
May Elfa Secioria's talent, passion (and dream) to enlive, share and
introduce the best, the most exciting and the most beautiful of
Indonesia music to Indonesians and to the world stage continue with us
all; and may through each and every of our own work, passion and
dedication, we (and each of us) can continue to try to put our best
effort too, to bring the best of Indonesia's talent and effort to
fellow Indonesians and to the world at large, for the betterness of
our people, for the betterness of our country, and for betterness of
greater world society as a whole.
